A spotlight on: Lucy Elliott, 31, Co-Founder of Creighton’s Chocolaterie

Think running a chocolate company like Creighton’s Chocolaterie would be all fun and games?!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news girls but you can think again!

This week, I had the pleasure of delving into the business story belonging to the female founder of a brand that I’ve had my eye on since day one of She can. She did. – the Founder in question being the creative genius that is Lucy Elliott, Co-Founder of Creighton’s Chocolaterie. Launched by Lucy and her Mum Andrea in 2011, Creighton’s Chocolaterie (apologies in advance for my dreadful French accent when I try and pronounce that in the intro by the way!) combines irresistible and unique flavours – crunchy noodle ramen chocolate bar anyone?! – with quirky, trend-led packaging that makes their chocolate bars stand out from the crowd.

Stocked in over 200 stores worldwide including the prestigious Harvey Nichols, Liberty’s and the National Portrait Gallery here in the UK, with some seriously cool collaborations with other brands to her company’s name too, in Lucy’s seriously funky house complete with baby pink convertible on the driveway, bright yellow front door and a hot pink staircase (!), I caught up with the chocolatier in her Bedfordshire home mid-January, to delve deeper into her story as a female founder launching, building and sustaining the company to date.

With nine years of entrepreneurial experience to her name, Lucy opens up about why she has a tendency to ignore the rule book and refuses to limit her ambition for the brand and how that’s shaped the whole ethos behind Creighton’s to date. She also reveals why she opted to open a chocolate shop on Leighton Buzzard high street nine years ago and how she navigated closing the shop last year to focus on the ever-growing demand for orders and collaborations. In addition, we also go on to discuss her candid take on the financial realities of running Creighton’s, why she has an ongoing vendetta against VAT (!) plus her refreshingly honest take on becoming a new Mum four years ago and her struggle to adapt to motherhood whilst trying to keep the business afloat…
